Terberg nets LNG tractor order in Turkey

Terberg Benschop of the Netherlands said it has secured a contract to supply 40 LNG-powered tractors for a new sophisticated container terminal in Turkey, on the Marmara Sea, approximately 135 km from Istanbul.

The Terberg YT222 tractor has a 170 kW Mercedes engine and it is powerful enough to handle two trailers carrying 20” containers, Terberg said in a statement.

Servicing and support of the LNG-powered tractors will be provided by Istanbul-based Portunus.

Asyaport, which is buliding the container terminal, chose this fuel as it eliminates particulate emissions and leads to much lower NOx emissions than diesel. Furthermore, in Turkey LNG is considerably cheaper than diesel and there is an LNG filling station close to the terminal, Terberg said.

Delivery of the tractors will start in January 2015.

The proposed port in Turkey will be strategically located as a transshipment hub for containers destined for the Black Sea via the Bosporus. The terminal will handle vessels carrying up to 18,000 TEU and will have an annual capacity of around 2 million TEU.
