TerraSond Wraps Up Surveys at Mayflower Wind

TerraSond has completed a geophysical survey at the Mayflower Wind offshore wind project in Massachusetts, U.S.

In the two-month campaign, the Acteon company surveyed the site located 20 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard that is said to have a capacity to support up to 1,600MW of offshore wind.

TerraSond said it acquired high-resolution geophysical data using a suite of equipment in water depths from 35 to 65m, with the New Bedford port supporting the work.

A Geosea DP2 multipurpose support vessel was used for deploying a sub-bottom profiler, medium-penetration seismic system, side-scan sonar, multibeam echosounder, magnetometer and passive acoustic monitoring sensor.

The acquired data is now being processed for delivery in November, according to the company.

“As always, we put safety and the environment first. The environmental monitoring plan, which included protected species observers and passive acoustic monitoring operators, resulted in no environmental impacts or harm to marine life, successfully meeting Mayflower Wind’s safety ambitions,” said Pedro Regino, TerraSond Project Manager.

To remind, Mayflower Wind, a joint venture of Shell New Energies and EDPR Offshore North America, submitted three 800MW proposals, as well as a 400MW proposal, in Massachusetts’ latest Request for Proposals (RFP) round for offshore wind.
