1. VIDEO: World’s largest semi-submersible taking shape


With topside dimensions of 150 metres by 110 metres, the Ichthys offshore processing facility will be the world’s largest semi-submersible platform. Once complete, it will be towed around 6,000 kilometres to the Ichthys field in the Browse Basin, offshore Western Australia.

 5.  Statoil: Gudrun field worth the wait (VIDEO)


At 07.25 on April 7, 2014 Statoil and its partners (GDF SUEZ and OMV) started production on the Gudrun oil and gas field in the North Sea.
“Gudrun is the first new Statoil-operated platform to come on stream on the Norwegian continental shelf since 2005. This is a red-letter day for the company,” saidArne Sigve Nylund, Statoil’s executive vice president for the Development and Production Norway business area.


6. Greenpeace calls for Lego to rescind Shell deal (VIDEO)

Greenpeace, protesting against Shell’s arctic drilling plans, alleges that LEGO is “helping Shell to threaten this beautiful and fragile place” by making toys carrying Shell’s logo, and has asked the Danish company to stop selling Shell-branded bricks and kits.

An offshore rig caught fire in Alaska in October. Subsequent investigation revealed the fire started and remained in the living quarters area of the platform.


8. VIDEO: Ultra harsh jack-up Maersk Interceptor named in Norway

Maersk Interceptor is the second in a series of four ultra harsh environment jack-up rigs to enter Maersk Drilling’s fleet. The four jack-up rigs represent a total investment of USD 2.6bn.

Lerwick Port Authority Harbour Master, Captain Calum Grains, said: “The successful handling of the Solan tank is another example of Lerwick’s ability to provide sites and support for major offshore projects. To accommodate two vessels the size of Xiang Yun Kou and Thialf simultaneously while servicing other oil and gas projects, cruise ships and daily operations is a clear demonstration of Lerwick’s scope.


10. Canary Islands: Two injured in protest against offshore drilling

One activist was hospitalized and another injured as Spanish Navy boats rammed Greenpeace boats engaged in a protest by Greenpeace against oil drilling in the Canary Islands, Spain in November.
