Two people have been injured when a bulk carrier, berthed off Port Hedland, caught fire.

The Panama registered bulk carrier Marigold reportedly suffered an engine room fire.

The ship’s crew responded with assistance from Port and civil emergency services.

The fire was extinguished and is now reliant on shore power.

The two injured crew members suffered smoke inhalation, and were airlifted to Hedland Health Campus for treatment.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, but some suggestions indicate that it was started by an explosion in the engine room.
