Ukraine: Kherson Shipyard Conducts Launching Ceremony for Converted Dry Cargo Vessel ALENA

Kherson Shipyard conducted launching ceremony of converted Dry Cargo Vessel ALENA. The Vessel has been converted to meet the requirements of Russian Marine Register of Shipping, Project 05074M, Volzhsky type, developed by Marine Engineering Bureau (MEB, Odessa) of donor vessel. The ship is designed for carrying general, bulk, timber and big-size cargoes.

Due to conversion the principle characteristics of the vessel have been changed: longitudinal and transverse cargo hold coamings have been raised by 2.5 m from existing ones; the conversion of fore and aft parts of the vessel have been carried out: forecastle and poop deck have been raised, hatch covers have been re-equipped.

On 25.04.2011 the vessel was lifted for conversion and in less than 3 months, the Shipyard performed major works on conversion. KSY Chief Technologist, Mr. Kupyansky, noted that in future the period of conversion of the vessel as per such project could be reduced by 3-4 weeks as all required technical documentation is already available.

The overall length of the vessel is 138,3 m, the width is 16,5 m, depth is 5,5 m, draft in sea/river is 4,10 m / 3,60 m. Conventional deadweight of the vessel in sea has been increased by more 40 % from 4350 tons up to 6150 tons. Number of holds: 4.

Mr. Vasily Fedin, General Director of Kherson Shipyard, Mr. Genady Egorov, General Director of Marine Engineering Bureau (MEB, Odessa), Mr. Eugeny Linev, Director of Shipchart, Mrs. Zoya Berezhnaya, member of Kherson City Council took part in the ceremonial launching of the vessel.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Genady Egorov, General Director of Marine Engineering Bureau, noted that the Shipyard had performed a big job in record time with high quality. The vessel became considerably safer and its lifetime has been prolonged minimum by 20 years.

The Customer’s representative (Shipchart company), Mr. Eugeny Linev mentioned that the vessel was an example of good combination of price and high quality of the works performed.” I will prolong the cooperation with Kherson Shipyard and will recommend it to others, because they managed to preserve both production technique and qualified personnel”.
