USA: Columbia River Dredging Moves Ahead

The Port of Portland dredge Oregon currently works in the Columbia River off Kalama.

The dredge is expected to clear 400,000 cubic yards of silt out of a mile-long stretch of the river through Christmas under a $1.5 million contract with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, according to corps spokeswoman Michelle Helms.

The dredge is pumping silt onto nearby Sandy Island on the Oregon side of the Columbia. Dredging maintains the ship channel at its authorized depth of 43 feet.
