USA: Newport News Shipbuilding Celebrates Opening of New Facility

Newport News Shipbuilding will on Friday, Aug. 24, hold the Grand opening ceremony of NNS’ Supplemental Module Outfitting Facility (SMOF), a $100 million investment to accommodate the Virginia Class Submarine Program.

The Supplemental Module Outfitting Facility (SMOF) will be used in the production of submarines for the Virginia Class Submarine program, which has been recognized as the best shipbuilding program in the Navy.

Construction of Washington (SSN 787) on Sept. 2, 2011, marked the beginning of the program’s two-submarines-per-year build plan.
