Port Arthur Seafarers' Center Gets Donation from Sabine Pilots

Captain Mark Taylor, President of the Sabine Pilots Association, presented a $10,000 check from the Sabine Pilots to Rev. Sinclair Oubre, Executive Director of The Port Arthur International Seafarers’ Center, at the second annual International Seafarers’ Center Cocktail Party on January 17, 2013 at the Seafarer’s Center.

We had twice as many people attend as last year,” said Fortune Ford, an event organizer, “and the donations and sponsorships exceeded our expectations!

The Sabine Pilots were pleased to join with other corporate sponsors in supporting such a worthy organization that contributes greatly to our community,” said Captain Taylor.

Honorary hosts for this year’s event were Mr. Paul Beard of Sabine Universal Products, and Chairman of the Sabine Neches Navigation District, and Mr. & Mrs. Joel Levingston of Levingston Funeral Home.

This year’s sponsors included the Port of Port Arthur, Port of Orange, West Gulf Maritime Association, Sabine Pilots Association, Marine Healthcare Services, Christus St. Mary’s Hospital, and Sodexo. The money that is raised each year goes to the operating expenses of the Port Arthur International Seafarers’ Center, and organizers hope to make this year’s event the biggest yet!

The Port Arthur International Seafarers’ Center provides maritime security, escorting and transportation, communication services, a game room, a store, a library, the Christmas Gift Box Program, Religious services (upon request), and personal and seafarers’ rights counseling.

Through millions of dollars of personal purchases in our local stores throughout the year, seafarers from around the world contribute thousands of dollars of sales tax into our local economy,” said Ford.
