USA: Savannah Harbor Expansion Project Nears Final Approval

Savannah Harbor Expansion Project Nears Final Approval

The Savannah Harbor Expansion Project is close to getting the final approval, says U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson.

The project will include harbor deepening, as well as improvements to increase the efficiency and safety of cargo vessel operations.

The Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP), a major project for the State of Georgia, had to clear various hurdles before starting the operations.

The SHEP will improve navigation by:

– Deepening the inner harbor to 47 feet MLLW and the entrance channel to 49 feet MLLW;

– Extending the entrance channel by 7 miles;

– Constructing three bend wideners and two meeting areas; and

– Enlarging the Kings Island Turning Basin at the Garden City Terminal.

Isakson added that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will have the final word on this project, reports wabe.org.
