USA: Senator Landrieu Applauds Sabine Pass Approval

Senator Landrieu Applauds Sabine Pass Approval

U.S. Senator Mary L. Landrieu, D-La., applauded the approval of the Sabine Pass Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility in Southwest Louisiana, which will be constructed by Cheniere Energy.

Sen. Landrieu has been pushing the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to complete its environmental assessment and approve the project. Sen. Landrieu applauded the approval and the economic benefits this project will bring to Louisiana and the country.

This is a fabulous news for Louisiana. Southwest Louisiana will house the first liquefied natural gas export facility in the country, which will bring a tremendous investment to our state. I have been working to get this project green-lighted for some time, so we take advantage of recent growth in the natural gas industry and secure new markets as we continue to grow this sector,” Sen. Landrieu said.

The Sabine Pass LNG project in Southwest Louisiana is estimated to create 150 permanent jobs, 3,000 peak construction jobs and $1 billion in construction labor. This new infrastructure will support nearly $6 billion in new investment through the development of a natural gas exports terminal from the Sabine Pass. It will create or sustain 30,000 to 50,000 jobs across the nation, many located in Louisiana.

This facility represents the huge growth that our nation has experienced in natural gas production over the last several years. This production is continuing to grow, and will be essential to increasing our energy independence and security,” Sen. Landrieu said.

In September 2011, Sen. Landrieu led the Louisiana Congressional delegation in sending a letter to FERC urging quick approval of the project.

In May 2011, the Department of Energy approved exporting liquefied natural gas from the Sabine Pass terminal. The project, once completed, will become the first and only LNG export facility in the lower 48 states.
