USA: Shaw Awarded Contract to Operate Sediment Processing Facility for GE

The Shaw Group Inc. today announced that its Environmental & Infrastructure Group has been awarded a contract to operate the sediment processing facility for the second phase of the General Electric Company’s Hudson River dredging project.

The facility is located in Fort Edward, N.Y., and includes a barge terminal, dewatering building, water treatment plant and railroad staging area. Shaw provided similar operations and maintenance services for the project’s first phase, which was conducted in 2009.

For decades, Shaw has provided advanced services that help restore and maintain the quality of our nation’s air, water and soil,” said George Bevan, president of Shaw’s Environmental & Infrastructure Group. “This award builds on our successful history with GE and this important sediment remediation project undertaken for the benefit of the environment and the community.”

In 2002 GE committed to working with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to remove sediment containing polychlorinated biphenyls from the Upper Hudson River. Dredging began in 2009 following years of analysis, planning and the design and construction of a processing facility to support remediation efforts.

The Hudson River dredging project is considered one of the largest and most logistically complex environmental cleanup efforts in U.S. history. GE estimates 2.4 million cubic yards of sediment will be dredged from a 40-mile stretch of the river throughout the project’s lifespan.

“Shaw demonstrated through its work during the first phase of this project that it shares GE’s commitment to excellence,” said Tim Kruppenbacher, GE’s operations manager for the Hudson River dredging project. “It is our collective goal to ensure that the project is performed as safely and efficiently as possible.”

Shaw plans to use local contractors and manpower from Washington County and New York’s Capital District to help execute the contract.

The undisclosed value of the contract will be included in Shaw’s Environmental & Infrastructure segment’s backlog of unfilled orders in the third quarter of fiscal year 2011.

The Shaw Group Inc. is a leading global provider of engineering, construction, technology, fabrication, remediation and support services for clients in the energy, chemicals, environmental, infrastructure and emergency response industries. A Fortune 500 company with fiscal year 2010 annual revenues of $7 billion, Shaw has approximately 27,000 employees around the world and is a power sector industry leader according to Engineering News-Record’s list of Top 500 Design Firms.
