VEB.RF: Russia to Pay around USD 4.5 Bn for New Arctic LNG 2 Tankers

The fifteen new ice-class liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers, that are envisaged to be deployed for the Arctic LNG 2 project, would cost over RUB 300 billion (USD 4.49 billion).

The overall cost of the project was revealed as part of a session of the Russian state-owned VEB.RF Bank Supervisory Board, where the bank’s Chairman, Igor Shuvalov, said that one vessel would cost around USD 330 million.

The project, being undertaken by Novatek and Sovcomflot in partnership with VEB.RF, would see the vessels delivered by 2024. Shuvalov stressed that they are looking to build the ships locally, at Russia’s Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex.

“The new vessels with a high ice class are aimed for carrying LNG under the Arctic LNG 2 project. They will navigate the Northern Sea Route and, of course, must comply with the most recent environmental and other requirements,” Dmitry Medvedev, Russian Prime Minister, said at the occasion.
