Planned to be operational this year, LNG will be drawn directly from the Pluto facilities and loaded onto specialist tanker trucks for distribution in Western Australia.

Woodside said in a statement on Tuesday it was “actively working to build the market for LNG fuel in the Pilbara, where each year around three billion litres of diesel is imported, primarily for mining.”

The second stage of the project is in the planning and feasibility phase and it would include infrastructure to provide LNG fuel for ocean-going ships such as iron ore carriers, according to Woodside.
