VIDEO: Damen Refit of Research Vessel Marion Dufresne II

Damen Shiprepair Dunkerque carried out renovation and lifetime extension work to oceanographic research vessel ‘Marion Dufresne II’ in 2015, owned by French administration Les Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises (TAAF) and managed by CMA CGM.

The renovation should extend the vessel’s life for twenty years.

The work included replacement of the vessel’s most important scientific apparatus, the multi-beam sonar.

Damen rebuilt the hull and installed a new gondola and control room. In addition, the ILOT capstan was completely renewed.

The hull was blasted and repainted as well as some of the ballast tanks.

The refit also included the vessel’s accommodation, which the yard renewed in cooperation with the client’s subcontractor.

Marion Dufresne II can accommodate 114 passengers or scientific researchers and 46 crew.
