VIDEO: Freighter Sinks in the Aegean Sea

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines-flagged general cargo ship Kerem S has reportedly sunk completely six days after it had grounded on the Greek island of Levitha, the Turkish daily Deniz Haber reports.

The ship had run aground due to a mechanical failure, and was stranded until Tuesday when it drifted into the sea carried by strong winds and high waves and sank.

All six crew members were safely airlifted from the 78-meter freighter by the Hellenic Coast Guard’s helicopter crew on Friday.

The 1572 dwt, 1983-built ship was sailing unladen from Heraklion, Crete to the Turkish port of Aliaga.

Visual examinations have revealed no pollution or oil spills so far.
