VIDEO: New Malampaya platform coming to its place

The video below shows Shell’s new gas production platform, which started production on Monday, offshore Palawan in the Philippines.

In the time-lapse footage, one can see the platform being built, towed to its offshore location and linked to the existing Malampaya Shallow Water Platform with a 50 meters long bridge. The platforms are located some 50km offshore Palawan in the western Philippines.

Shell Philippines Exploration, B.V. (SPEX), Chevron Malampaya LLC (Chevron) and the Philippine National Oil Company- Exploration Corporation (PNOC-EC) are partners in Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power project.

According to Shell, the operator of the project, more than 1,400 Filipino workers took part in building and installing the new platform. This is the first offshore platform designed and built in the Philippines.

The new platform, Phase 3 of the Malampaya project, is designed to maintain the supply around 30% of the country’s energy needs of natural gas, Shell has said.
