VIDEO: Shah Deniz Stage 2 well underway

The operator of the Shah Deniz field, the UK oil and gas major BP, has released a video showing the progress of the Shah Deniz Stage 2 project. 

According to BP, Shah Deniz Stage 2 is one of the largest gas developments in the world that will help increase European energy security by bringing Caspian gas resources to markets in Europe for the very first time.

The current concept for Shah Deniz Stage 2 includes two new bridge-linked offshore platforms, 26 gas production wells which will be drilled with 2 semi-submersible rigs, 500 km of subsea pipelines will link the wells with the onshore terminal, upgrade of the offshore construction vessels, and expansion of the Sangachal terminal to accommodate the new gas processing and compression facilities.

The gas from the Caspian Sea will be transported through a 3,500 kilometers long Southern Gas Corridor pipeline system. The Southern Gas Corridor consists of South Caucasus Pipeline (SCP), which will be expanded with a new parallel pipeline across Azerbaijan and Georgia, the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP), which will transport Shah Deniz gas across Turkey, and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), which will take gas through Greece and Albania into Italy.

According to BP’s video, 8 of 26 wells have already been drilled for Shah Deniz 2 and three Baku yards will deliver the Shah Deniz 2 facilities.

In addition, the video shows that the expansion of SCP is 31% done and 135 kilometeres of line-pipe have already been delivered to Azerbaijan.

Furthermore, over 12,500 people are involved in construction activities across all main contracts, over 85% of them being Azerbaijani nationals, and more than $5 billion new contract awards involve local Azerbaijani companies.

First gas is targeted in late 2018, with supplies to Georgia and Turkey. Gas deliveries to Europe are expected just over a year after first gas.
