Finnish engine manufacturer Wärtsilä recently reached a milestone with the completion of the 500th engine factory acceptance test (FAT) for its Wärtsilä 50DF engine.

The FAT was completed at the Wärtsilä-Hyundai Engine Company facility in Mokpo, South Korea, the company said in a brief statement. The factory was completed in 2008.

The first Wärtsilä 50DF engine was introduced 13 years ago for a 74,000 m3 LNG carrier which was the first LNG carrier to be powered by electric propulsion, and one of first to have internal combustion engines, the company said.

The engine can be run on natural gas, light fuel oil or heavy fuel oil with the ability to switch between fuels whilst operating, according to Wärtsilä’s website.
