Worker crushed during Goliat construction

A worker died last week at a Hyundai Heavy Industries yard after a heavy load fell on him from a height of five meters, according to South Korea’s The Hankyoreh.

According to the website, the worker, employed by a HHI subcontractor as part of the Goliat platform construction project, sustained severe injuries after a 3.5 ton piece of metal being moved by a crane, cut through the fabric and crushed the man standing beneath.

The accident happened in Ulsan, South Korea, on Thursday, October 23. The 55 years old man died in a hospital two days later.

The Goliat platform is being built for Eni Norge, a subsidiary of Italian oil company Eni. Once complete, the platform will be deployed at the Goliat field in the Barents Sea, offshore Norway.

Teknisk Ukelblad, a Norwegian website, reported that this is the second fatal incident in the yard, linked to the construction of the Goliat platform.

Eni Norge did not immediately respond to an e-mail seeking more information, sent by Offshore Energy Today.

The Hankyoreh has said that Hyundai has drawn criticism after being accused of outsourcing dangerous tasks to subcontractors. The newspaper claims that of seven fatal accidents recorded at the shipyard this year, all seven involved subcontractor workers.
