4th European Well Abandonment Seminar Held in Aberdeen, UK

Oil and gas industry professionals are meeting today at the 4th European Well Abandonment Seminar in Aberdeen, where key information are being given on updated regulations affecting UK and Norwegian operations.

This year’s event is hosting keynote speakers Paul Dymond of Oil & Gas UK and Andrew Carr of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

A number of international operators and service providers including Shell UK, Talisman, Apache, Chevron, Perenco, Wintershall, Conoco Phillips, BP, Island Offshore Subsea and Baker Hughes, are also presenting on developments in plug and abandonment and new technologies, as well as discussing case studies and lessons learned.

A particular highlight of this one day event is a presentation from the Oil & Gas UK Well Suspension and Abandonment workgroup on the 2012 changes to regulations affecting well abandonment. This presentation also addresses new guidelines introduced last year for the qualification of materials and for cost estimation.

Seminar chairman, Graeme Rae, rig build project senior engineer at Chevron Upstream Europe, said: “Well abandonment is a complex and constantly evolving area. In recent years we have seen service providers develop a number of new technologies to improve safety and efficiency, particularly in light of the 2010 Macondo incident.

“The number of specialists in the field of well abandonment are increasing, however, they are still limited and therefore it is hugely important that operators, service companies, consultants, regulators and academics come together to share best practices and intelligence on the latest industry advances. This seminar is the premier forum in Europe for holding these discussions.”

The seminar and exhibition, organised by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) takes place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on 18 April.

The event, which is sponsored by Schlumberger, is open to anyone involved in well abandonment including drilling, completions, project, well integrity, environmental and commercial personnel.
