Great Lakes Shipyard Hosts Naming Ceremony for HANDY-THREE tugboat

Great Lakes Shipyard, a division of the Great Lakes Towing Company, hosted a naming ceremony for the newly constructed tugboat, HANDY-THREE on Wednesday, May 2nd 2012.

The ceremony was auspiced by Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur, Representative of Northern Ohio’s Ninth Congressional District who was also the keynote speaker, informed the Maritime Executive.

The vessel, purchased by Puerto Rico Towing & Barge Co. of San Juan, Puerto Rico has been designed by Jensen Maritime Consultants, Seattle, Washington. It belongs to the Handy Size class of tugboats and with 2, 000 – 4,000 horse power it is intended for harbor work, construction operations as well as for coastal barge towing.

The Great Lakes Towing Company, operating a fleet of over 35 tug boats, has a full-service shipyard with a 770-ton Travelift and a 250-ton dry dock. With 113 years of experience, the Company is currently undergoing the fourth and last phase of its Shipyard Expansion Project which is expected to be finished by July, 2014.
