USS Barry Receives Latest Technology and Equipment at BAE Systems Ship Repair

USS Barry (DDG 52) successfully completed an availability to modernize its hull, mechanical and electrical (HM&E) systems, May 25, in Norfolk, Va.

The effort is the first of two maintenance and modernization availabilities designed to the equip the ship with the latest technology and equipment through its planned service life. USS Barry’s recent availability addressed hull strengthening, crew facilities, and improvements to machinery control and integrated bridge and navigation systems

“DDG 52 is now the fifth destroyer to successfully undergo HM&E upgrades signifying this program is well underway and executing as planned,” said Capt. Brian Eckerle, surface combatants program manager, Naval Sea Systems Command Surface Warfare Directorate. “These significant upgrades enable these capable ships to return to the fleet fully modernized and ready for tasking.”

USS Barry will undergo a second maintenance and modernization availability in fiscal year 2013. Planned upgrades include combat system capabilities and enhancing the ship’s self defense systems

BAE Systems Ship Repair conducted the work as part of the Navy’s guided missile destroyer modernization program. Modernizations are planned for the first 28 ships of the Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers, concluding with USS Porter (DDG 78).

Naval Sea Systems Command’s Surface Warfare Directorate manages the complete lifecycle support for non-nuclear surface ships. Through planned modernization and upgrade programs, the directorate will equip today’s surface ships with the latest technologies and systems to sustain them in the fleet through their service lives.
