Dutch Tug Willem-B Sr Gets Thorn-D Antifouling Application

Thorn-D has been applied on the Dutch Tug “Willem-B Sr”of BMS Towing BV. BMS Towing BV has 5 tugs with a bollard pull up to 50 tons. The Willem-B sr. has an underwater surface of 200 m2 and is mainly used in the Dutch and UK waters.

Thorn-D has been applied on the metal hull of the vessel. Before application of Thorn-D, the hull was water pressure washed and a standard primer has been applied in order to seal the old antifouling layers. Although the hull was rough and unequal, Thorn-D can easily be applied and smoothens the surface.

In case a ship or boat would not use antifouling coatings or other fouling protection, underwater drag will increase in a short time. Increased underwater drag increases fuel consumption up to 40%.

Key drivers:

  • Maintain/increase speed
  • Minimize fuel costs
  • Minimize drydock costs
  • Minimize emmissions (SOx, NOx, CO2)
  • Minimize environmental footprint
