China: MV XIN OU ZHOU Redelivered Ahead of Schedule

MV XIN OU ZHOU departed from CIC Changxing Shipyard one day earlier than repair schedule.

MV XIN OU ZHOU is a container vessel which belongs to China Shipping Container Lines with CCS classification certificate. Her dimension is 335.00 meter in length, 42.80 meter in breadth, and 24.80 meter in depth. She came alongside the shipyard on Oct. 23rd, 2012 with an estimated repair period of 12days for her first 5-year special survey. The main project of this repair included docking repair, sandblasting for lower part of cargo holds No.1-9, steel job in cargo holds and lashing bar in cat way, as well as the hatch covers painting.

The ship repair manager (SRM) and superintendents have already made a very elaborate repair schedule before her berthing, including the finish of the cargo hold painting job before entering the drydock (estimated docking date was Oct. 27th). Actually, she arrived the shipyard at night time of Oct. 23rd, and then SRM organized the manpower to shift all the hatch covers ashore and clean all the cargo holds, which saved much time for high pressure water washing of the hatch covers and cargo holds the next day. On the afternoon of Nov. 26th, the sandblasting of cargo holds was ready for owner’s inspection. The painting supervisor organized the painting department staffs for assisting the owner’s inspection of the whole night, and finally under reasonable arrangement, three coats of painting inside cargo holds were completed before she entered the drydock, by which established a solid base of the earlier delivery.

The compact arrangement and good coordination of job in drydock also played a very important role for the repair schedule. All the docking jobs finished one day before her undocking, such as steel job on the deck, conversion of the accommodation ladder, the life boat and davit, the crane and jobs in engine room. Meanwhile, SRM arranged cleaning job timely in order to save time for refitting the hatch covers and painting jobs.

In a word, the good communication and close coordination between yard side and shipside were the key factors of this successful repair. For the shipside, the superintendents informed the ship crew pumping out all water from high pressure water washing of cargo hold the whole night and well cooperated during the sandblasting of the cargo hold; For the yard side, they tried their best to fulfill all the requirements from the superintendent and shipside, such as the additional hatch coaming steel job, etc.
