China: Repaired Vessel AN SHENG 16 Leaves CIC Changxing Shipyard

Container vessel AN SHENG 16 sustained sea damage during its recent operation. Owner required the shipyard a quick repair of the vessel with some cargo onboard and hoped to put her into operation soonest possible. Changxing Shipyard took consideration of the owner’s interest.

The top management immediately organized the departments to develop a targeted safety planning. After day and night continuous construction, the vessel was completed the sea damage repair one day in advance of the schedule.

On the evening of 9th December, the vessel came into the shipyard with 92 containers, including 24 full load containers and 68 empty containers. The repair period was only 5 days, the major work was the sea damage of the watch station. On the first day of the vessel’s arrival, the production department, safety department immediately went on board to check the cargo, to make the safety plan and repair procedure. The deputy GM of China Shipping Industry Co. Li Zhengjian checked the safety condition of “AN SHENG 16” and said that as to the aged ship’s cabin and living area high attention should be paid to fire prevention and the existing tank’s capacity and the remaining oil amount should be learnt, as well as the ‘Three Plan’ of the oil tank, not only focusing on the sea damage area.

In a  review of the safety management features of the container ships with the cargo, the safety department understood the distribution of the container and took a series of pre-control measures to actively carry out the work of anti-fire and anti-explosion. They strictly carried out the safety procedure, strengthened the operations of the key parts of the fire safety supervision. The foremen were on-site tracking with 24 hours monitoring, which provided a strong guarantee for the fast completion of the repair work.

Her main repair work was the forecastle steel plate and piping systems renewal. Thanks to the rapid response and job arrangement by the production department on the first day of her arrival, all the jobs could be started at 9:00 the next day. After the careful organization, the welding and fitting of the steel plate were separately carried out, that ensured the quality and the time. With the efforts of two days and nights, the repair mission was fulfilled in a very short period of time, and the welding seam past the ultrasonic test inspection.
