Ramboll put in charge of Al-Shaheen pre-FEED study

Engineering consulting firm Ramboll has been appointed by the North Oil Company (NOC) to carry out a pre-FEED study for three new wellhead platforms at the gigantic Al-Shaheen field in the Arabian Gulf off Qatar.

Al-Shaheen is the largest offshore oil field in Qatar, covering more than 40% of Qatar’s oil production. NOC recently awarded Ramboll a pre-FEED study for three new wellhead platforms that will secure production and possibly maximize the recovery potential, Rambol stated in a press release on Thursday.

Tommy Amstrup Laursen, Managing Director for Ramboll Oil & Gas in Middle East, said:  “Although this is not the first time Ramboll is involved on Al-Shaheen, we are extremely honored to work on this ambitious field development once again.”

Ramboll has previously carried out detailed brownfield design on Al-Shaheen spending almost 3 million hours on what is known as one of the largest and most complex oil and gas projects undertaken, the company noted.

“Qatar has one of the fastest growing economies in the world and Al-Shaheen significantly contributes to the country’s economy and energy security. Therefore we have prepared carefully and thoroughly to be part of this new initiative,” added Amstrup Laursen.

New field developer from July

Al-Shaheen is situated 80 km north of Doha, in the North Gas Field. It covers 2.214 square kilometers and it has an offshore reservoir that currently produces approximately 300.000 barrels of oil per day.

Al-Shaheen has been developed by Maersk Oil since 1992. From July 2017 NOC, a joint venture between Qatar Petroleum and Total, will be the new developer of Al-Shaheen for the next 25 years.

The new operator also recently awarded a five-year deal to the FSO Africa and FSO Asia for operations on the Al-Shaheen field.
