Wärtsilä of Finland launched a series of shuttle ferry concepts aimed at reducing or completely eliminating exhaust emissions.

One of the concepts developed through the cooperation between Wärtsilä’s Ship Design and Electrical & Automation offices features a battery-engine hybrid configuration in which the fuel option is liquefied natural gas or biofuel, Wärtsilä said in a statement.

The Finnish company claims that when running completely on batteries, the ferries’ emissions are completely eliminated while, during operation in a battery-LNG combination, emissions are reduced by up to 50 percent.

Ferries are designed to accommodate 60 to 120 cars on a single car deck.
