BW LNG names newbuild vessel pair at Hanwha Ocean’s shipyard

BW LNG, part of BW Group, has held a naming ceremony for two new liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels at a shipyard in South Korea, Asia.

BW LNG christened two LNG ships, BW Nivalis and BW Borealis, on January 8, 2026, at Hanwha Ocean’s Okpo Shipyard in South Korea. These vessels were blessed by their godmothers, Anne Mai Hatlem, Senior Vice President, and Heidi Aakre, Vice President, at Norway’s Equinor.

While BW Nivalis is named after the Latin word for ‘Snow’, BW Borealis means ‘Northern’. The sister vessels will be delivered in the first quarter straight into long-term charters with the Norwegian state-owned energy giant.

The two Singapore-flagged vessels feature a design that is said to enable the industry’s lowest fuel consumption and emissions. Both ships have a carrying capacity of 174,000 cbm, equipped with MEGI propulsion, a full re-liquefaction system, shaft generators, and ALS.

BW LNG, which owns and operates a fleet of over 30 LNG vessels and FSRUs/ FSUs, including two additional newbuilds under construction, emphasized: “We are committed to delivering high-quality vessels and optimising operations for our customers, while supporting progress towards a low-carbon society.
