Boskalis’ new subsea rock installation vessel starts work on Polish offshore wind project

Boskalis’s new subsea rock installation (SRI) vessel Windpiper has departed the Port of Rotterdam to pick up its first load and sail to an offshore wind farm site in the Polish sector of the Baltic Sea.

In an update posted on social media, Boskalis said the SRI vessel will load 45,500 metric tons of rock into its two cargo holds at a quarry in Norway and then continue to the Baltic Sea to carry out its first subsea rock installation campaign. While the company did not specifically state the offshore wind farm’s name, according to accompanying information in the post, the project is most likely 1.2 GW Baltic Power.

Windpiper, described by the company as the largest vessel of this kind in the industry, was christened earlier this month, following a year and a half of conversion work.

The vessel, whose purchase Boskalis announced in January 2025, was developed by converting an existing vessel into an SRI vessel with a rock-carrying capacity of 45,500 metric tons.

Windpiper is 227 meters long and 40 meters wide, featuring a total installed power exceeding 31,000 kW and over a hundred single-occupancy cabins.
