Swedish firm picks up work for 1.5 GW LNG-to-power project in Southeast Asia

AFRY, a Swedish engineering, design, and advisory company, has secured a key technical advisory role on a liquefied natural gas (LNG) development in Vietnam. The 1.5 GW LNG-to-power project involves an integrated floating LNG (FLNG) terminal and gas-fired power plant, supporting the expansion of LNG infrastructure in Southeast Asia.

AFRY has been selected as the international technical advisor (ITA) for the 1.5 GW Thai Binh LNG-to-power project, valued at $2.69 billion, in Hung Yen, Vietnam. The company’s scope of work covers technical advisory services for the project’s offshore and onshore infrastructure and broader support throughout the development phase.

Yasushi Kuno, Chief Executive Officer at Thai Binh LNG Power JSC, commented: “AFRY brings extensive experience in LNG-to-power developments and a solid track record in delivering technical advisory and engineering services for complex energy infrastructure. Its regional presence and understanding of local conditions made AFRY a well-suited partner for this project.”

The infrastructure will connect to a floating LNG terminal that will supply natural gas to a 1.5 GW power plant, creating an integrated LNG-to-power development. With Vietnam’s electricity demand on the rise, the firm emphasizes that this assignment supports the development of LNG infrastructure, strengthening the country’s power generation capacity.

The Swedish player’s job includes technical advisory services for offshore LNG receiving infrastructure and a combined cycle power plant (CCPP), including subsea gas pipeline systems, a submerged yoke mooring, marine facilities, and offshore surveys.

Work on the Thai Binh LNG-to-Power project began in October 2025, with operations slated to start in late 2029. The project, which is expected to supply 6–10 billion kWh of electricity annually, is being developed by Thái Bình LNG Power JSC, a consortium comprising Tokyo Gas (40%), Kyuden (30%), and TTVN Group (30%).

Vietnam is actively developing its LNG infrastructure, as illustrated by SK Innovation, PetroVietnam Power, and NASU, which held the Quynh Lap LNG project launch and infrastructure groundbreaking ceremony in May 2026 in Nghe An Province.
