China: Changxing Shipyard Completes Repairs on LAPIS ARROW

On June 5th, 2011, Changxing Shipyard completed the repair of MV “LAPIS ARROW” to owner’s satisfaction. MV “LAPIS ARROW” with LOA of 176m and LOB of 31m, belongs to Stamco Ship Management Co., Ltd. This time she entered Changxing Shipyard for her special survey.

MV “LAPIS ARROW” had a quite tight schedule for repair and should drydock at the same night on her arrival. As a Ro-Ro ship, her passage of transferring was quite narrow and difficult to go through. The ship repair manager and supervisors had made well preparations in advance, transported and installed all the necessary equipments, tool boxes and etc. within 2 hrs after her arrival. Everything was ready for her docking.

The mainly work scope for deck was the rewelding of shell plate crack and shell plate renewal. As for the engine part, there were some normal items such as overhaul for T/C and main engine cylinders, pipes, heat exchanger and boiler and etc. It was a quite tight schedule to finish all these items within 6 days. SRM made a sound general schedule and the supervisors refined the schedule accordingly. Delay was not allowed for the fixed schedule. Moreover, the foremen made relevant arrangement, coordinated closely and controlled the working progress strictly.

In the progress of renewing tailshaft seal, the service engineer found the tailshaft liner were over worn and impossible to use anymore unless the contact surface was machined or altered. However, the ship owner refused the proposal for removing/refitting the liner and only permit to alter the contact surface. The problem was no suitable joint onboard at that time and it would take at least five days to get this spare part from Germany. The schedule was not allowed us to take this solution. SRM, supervisors and the foremen inspected on situ, took the measurement, made a working procedure and worked overnight to complete the joint the next day morning. The ship owner expressed their high appreciation and showed his big thumb to us.
