The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) granted approval in principle (AIP) for Chiyoda Corporation’s floating LNG power plant and FSRU design concepts.

ABS worked with Chiyoda to prove the feasibility of the new concept, Patrick Janssens, ABS vice president for global gas solutions said.

This concept enables a new approach to deliver new sources of power to remote areas of the world.

It is based on existing LNG carriers which are converted into floating power plants with small (~72 MW) to medium (~400 MW) scale power generation capabilities.

Speaking of the design Chiyoda Corporation project manager Toyomitsu Kanai said that by basing this concept on existing LNG carriers, the company is able to reduce constructions costs and shorten delivery times.
