Norway: Aibel Achieves New Milestone at Troll A Living Quarters Project

After extensive remodelling and installation work, all the 150 new single cabins are ready for use at Troll A. The project has been led from Aibel’s offices at Billingstad.

The contract on Troll A was signed in 2007, and the project is to be finished during autumn 2011.

This has been a large and challenging task’, Einar Steenstrup states. He is Aibel’s Project director for Troll A Living quarters extension (LQE).

‘We have deconstructed large parts of the platform to accommodate the expansion of the main frame and the new modules for living quarters. So there has been a lot of heavy installation work, without any delays in production’.

The new living quarters are divided into three parts, North and South modules are already in use, and now the East module is ready. Staff working offshore has gone from 40 to 135, as new cabins have been completed.

It is Aibel’s office at Billingstad who has been in charge of the project. Project management, engineering and procurement have been conducted here, and prefabrication has taken place in Haugesund.

The housing modules are provided by Apply Leirvik as a separate contract with Statoil, but all modification work on the platform and hook-up of housing modules have been Aibel’s responsibility. The Project director is impressed with the improvements;

‘Now we are talking almost cruise ship standards’, he says. ‘The facilities are great, there’s a new kitchen and living room, a fully equipped gym, a wellness centre and even a golf simulator. Rebuilding the old living quarters remains to be done, this will include a new dining room, new laundry, new offices, workshops and similar facilities.

Gas pipeline ready for connection

Aibel’s job at the Troll A has, in addition to housing modules, also included the installation work on the platform for the new 36″gas pipeline to Kollsnes. The pipeline is laid, and the connection works and preparation for the trial is already on the go, to be ready to start gas exports 1 October this year.
