Argentina’s July LNG imports hit record highs

Imports of liquefied natural gas to Argentina totaled 1,997,360 cbm in July, reaching a record high during the country’s coldest month.

Platts unit, Eclipse Energy and the National Commission of Atomic Energy revealed that the reason for the rising imports was a higher demand for electricity during this year.

Compared to the month of June when the country’s imports were at 1,535,904 cbm, July imports rose 30%, and 33% on the same month in 2014 when Argentina imported 1,492,586 cbm of LNG.

State-owned buyer, Enarsa, launched a tender for 7 cargoes of LNG in early May after electricity demand kept climbing from February through April. Trafigura delivered 6 cargoes to the Escobar LNG terminal while a single cargo to Bahia Blanca terminal was delivered by Gas Natural Fenosa. This brought the number of cargoes imported in July to 14.
