Arklow Vessel Towed to Safety after Engine Failure

The bulk carrier Arklow Resolve suffered an engine failure, causing the ship to start drifting in the morning hours of September 11 off the coast of Marstrand, Sweden.

Units from the Swedish Coast Guard were sent to the scene to assist the vessel, which ran into trouble shortly after departing Gothenburg for Seville, Spain.

The Coast Guard teams attached a tow line to the ship and towed it to safety. According to AIS data provided by MarineTraffic, the 4,868 dwt cargo vessel is currently moored in Hono waters, Gothenburg.

Arklow Resolve is loaded with fertilizer and has about 86 tonnes of bunker oil and about 27 tons of diesel on board.

“The oil on board and the fertilizer in the cargo could have caused major damage to the marine environment,” rescue leader Filip Lundgren said.

The 2004-built cargo ship is operated by Ireland-based shipping firm Arklow Shipping.
