Arun LNG export story comes to an end

Last week the global LNG industry reached a major turning point after Indonesia’s Arun plant stopped producing LNG.

After 36 years of LNG production, the plant will on Wednesday, October 15, export its last LNG cargo, Reuters cited Teuku Khaidir, president director of Perta Arun Gas.

Perta Arun Gas, a unit of Pertamina, will be the operator of the Arun LNG import project as the plant is being converted to a receiving and regasification terminal.

The Arun terminal at Blang Lancang, Lhokseumawe region, will be the first LNG export terminal converted into import terminal.

Indonesia is still one of the world’s largest LNG exporters, but the rise in domestic gas consumption has prompted the country to turn to imports.

The Arun import terminal is expected to receive its first LNG shipments from BP’s Tangguh project next year.
