Australia: QGC Calls for Senate Bill Withdrawal

QGC Calls for Senate Bill Withdrawal

QGC, a BG unit, has submitted its response to a Senate inquiry on proposed changes to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, Australia’s primary environment law.

The Senate inquiry follows proposed amendments announced by the Government on 12 March 2013 and rushed into Parliament the following day.

The Bill, which was introduced without any stakeholder consultation, passed the Lower House on 21 March 2013 with the support of independent MPs.

In a letter to the Senate Standing Committees on Environment and Communications, Tracey Winters, QGC Vice-President Environment, calls for the Bill to be withdrawn.

She says that the proposed amendments have serious implications for the Queensland Curtis LNG Project, which already adheres to more than 1,500 conditions and 8,000 sub-conditions.

The amendments are scheduled to be debated in the Senate from 14 May 2013.
