Azerbaijan: SOCAR Begins Seismic Survey at Umid and Babak

Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR has started 3D seismic data acquisition operations at Umid and Babak offshore blocks in the Caspian Sea to gain more information on availability of the South Caspian basin, as well as its geological structure.

Caspian Geophysical, a joint venture between WesternGeco (Schlumberger) and the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), is using its “m/v Gilavar”, a six streamer 3D seismic vessel which has so far successfully worked for major oil and gas companies such as Shell, BP, Maersk and Petrobras.

According to SOCAR, the survey started on February 27 and is expected to be completed in April. After the completion of the survey, the data acquired will be thoroughly examined in Caspian Geophysical’s Data Processing Center in Baku.
