Barzan Offshore Project to Come on Stream in 2014 (Qatar)

Qatar’s Barzan offshore project is expected to be commissioned next year, The Peninsula has reported, quoting a statement made by the Qatari energy minister Mohammed Al-Sada.

During the “Offshore Middle East 2013” event held in Doha this week, Al-Sada said:“For the development of offshore gas we are constructing Barzan offshore gas project. It will have three of the largest wellhead platforms ever built in our North Field and is scheduled to be completed by 2014.”

The $10.4 billion project is expected to help Qatar satisfy the country’s rising domestic gas demand.

The offshore platform to supply the Barzan Gas plant will be located 80 kilometres north-east of Ras Laffan Industrial City, with onshore and offshore facilities to be completed by JGC of Japan and Hyundai Heavy Industries of South Korea respectively. The project itself will be developed in two phases: Train 1 will come on stream in 2014, with Train 2 following in 2015. Together they will supply around 2 billion standard cubic feet per day of sales gas. Much of this production will be directed to the power and water sector.
