BP fires up more gas wells off Trinidad as terminal electrification works continue in Azerbaijan

While construction activities for its terminal electrification project are underway in Azerbaijan, the UK-headquartered energy giant BP has drilled and put into production mode three remaining wells in its seven-well drilling campaign off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago.

The firm’s third subsea development, Cyprestarted production off the southeast coast of Trinidad within the East Mayaro Block in April 2025, as a tie-back to the Juniper platform. The company’s subsidiary, BP Trinidad and Tobago (bpTT), has since completed the seven-well drilling program in the aftermath of the delivery of first gas.

Following the four wells that were drilled and completed at the end of 2024 with the first gas delivered this year, the project team has drilled, completed and commissioned the remaining three wells. Cypre is projected to deliver approximately 45,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day at peak, approximately 250 million standard cubic feet of gas a day.

Located 78 kilometers off the southeast coast of Trinidad within the East Mayaro Block, in water depth of approximately 80 meters, the Cypre gas field is 100% owned by BP Trinidad and Tobago, which is held by BP (70%) and Repsol (30%). The firm currently operates 12 offshore platforms, three subsea installations, and two onshore processing facilities.

Meanwhile, BP has conformed that the construction activities for the Sangachal Terminal Electrification (STEL) project are progressing safely and on schedule. The investors in the terminal are BP, SOCAR, TPAO, LUKOIL, SGC, NICO, MOL, INPEX, ExxonMobil, ITOCHU, ONGC Videsh, Eni, MVM, and TotalEnergies.

The project has led to three major contract awards to ensure the terminal is fully electrified by the end of 2028. An engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, worth approximately $43 million, has been awarded to AzerEnerji OJSC. The scope includes three key activity areas: construction of a new substation, installation of underground cables and erection of overhead power lines.

As part of this deal, civil works are perceived to be nearing completion across all fronts, with equipment installation and cable-pulling activities set to begin as the project transitions into its next delivery phase.

A $19 million construction and fabrication contract has been given to Azfen MMC for what is described as major electrical infrastructure works within the Sangachal terminal, including installation of transformers, synchronous condensers, current limiting reactors, and a new 110 kV switchyard.

As part of the contract, construction activities within the terminal started in August 2025 and are advancing across multiple work fronts, including foundations for key equipment installations. A £7 million engineering and procurement contract has been awarded to SOCAR and KBR to execute the Sangachal terminal engineering and procurement scope.

Thanks to this agreement, a detailed design, equipment supply, and procurement management services will be delivered, with the scope also entailing support for construction, commissioning, and operations readiness planning. As part of this contract, project activities are said to be in progress, with current efforts focused on detailed engineering and equipment expediting.

As we move into the next phases, our focus remains on safety, high quality and strong execution that will deliver a resilient power infrastructure that will support the terminal’s long-term operational excellence.”

The STEL project’s completion is expected in two stages: Stage 1 in mid-2027, and Stage 2 by the end of 2028. This development is linked to the Shafag (Jabrayil) solar project, which consists of construction of a new 240 MW AC solar plant in the Jabrayil district of Azerbaijan via a new commercial structure called ‘virtual power transfer arrangement.’

This will enable the terminal to connect to the national grid, operated by AzerEnerji, via new facilities to be built both within and outside the terminal, including a new 220/110 kV electricity substation.

According to BP, the Shafag and STEL projects are expected to support the reduction of operational emissions by around 50% over the future life of the Sangachal terminal, based on the current outlook and plans.

Following the electrification of the terminal, the seven gas turbines currently used at the terminal to generate power will be removed in phases, freeing up the fuel gas for export.
