British Ports Association Elects New Chairman

British Ports Association Elects New Chairman

Colin Parker, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Harbour Board, has been elected Chairman of the British Ports Association for the next two years at its AGM in London on 27 March. Also elected was Andrew Moffat, Chief Executive of the Port of Tyne, as Vice Chairman and Sara Bassett, Finance Director of Shoreham Port Authority, as Treasurer.

Speaking at the lunch afterwards in the presence of over 200 industry delegates and the Ports and Shipping Minister, Mike Penning, Mr Parker said, “I am delighted to become Chairman of the Association. The BPA has a terrific network of ports representing a host of locations and markets. It will be a privilege to represent their interests at a time when, in spite of economic challenges, ports are being rightly recognised for the huge contributions they make to the economy and to national well being.”

Referring to the publication of a booklet celebrating the Association’s 20th anniversary, Mr Parker went on to say, “We have taken the opportunity to go into print on some of the main events of the past 20 years – how we have got to where we are today.”

“Of course there have been huge changes. On every aspect, whether it’s customer focus, the environment or safety, ports have upped their game.”

“The booklet is also about the future – about partnerships with governments and an acknowledgement that all ports, whatever their size or type, deserve and require equal representation.”

During his address, Mr Parker also paid tribute to his predecessor, Jim Stewart, who continues in his role as Chairman of Port Skills and Safety.
