Brittany Ferries, STX France in LNG Ferry Construction Deal

Brittany Ferries, a leading French ferry operator headquartered in Roscoff, announced plans for the world’s biggest LNG – powered ferry.

Brittany Ferries said earlier this month that they were about to sign a contract with STX France for the construction of the ferry at its Saint Nazaire shipyard.

The project, first announced in March 2011, is designed by STX France, under Pegasis (Power Efficient Gas Innovation Ship) solution, an innovative gas propulsion system for passenger ships.

The ship will use dual-fuel engines powered by liquefied natural gas and by a high-efficiency electric motor, which will reduce energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 20 %. Nitrogen and sulphur oxides emissions will also be cut by 90% and 100%.

Jean-Marc Roué, chairman of the Brittany Ferries supervisory council, said that the delivery is planned for 2017.
