Giant bulker beached on a reef off Mauritius

A large bulk carrier MV Wakashio ran aground at Pointe D’Esny, Mauritius on July 25.

The Panamian-flagged Capesize bulker, built in 2007, was underway in the Indian Ocean from China to Brazil when it ran aground on a reef a few meters from the beach.

The 203,000 dwt ship is managed by Japanese company Nagashiki Shipping.

Based on the available information, the ship is not carrying any cargo and there has been no major pollution reported so far.

The area is well known for its pristine waters and delicate marine ecosystem.

The local authorities plan to refloat the ship and are monitoring the situation. For the time being the ship remains stable.

The cause of the incident is yet to be determined.
