Bunker Holding, Kosan Crisplant to build LNG plant in Denmark

Bunker Holdings’ subsidiary, Unioil Supply, and Kosan Crisplant are planning to build an LNG production facility at the Port of Frederikshavn in the northern part of Denmark.

The partners have already made progress in planning of the production facility in Frederikshavn which will produce chilled gas for the maritime sectors in Denmark and Sweden, Bunker Holding said in a statement on Wednesday.

The total investment in the liquefied natural gas project will be more than 30 million euros.

According to Bunker Holding, Frederikshavn was not randomly selected for the location of the plant.

“Roughly 100,000 ships pass the straits near Skagen every year in northerly or southerly directions, making Frederikshavn the most ideal geographical location for the new LNG collaboration,” the company said.

The production plant will be delivered by the Danish company Kosan Crisplant, a supplier of equipment for infrastructure and facilities for the production and handling of gas. Unioil Supply, Bunker Holding’s subsidiary in Aalborg, will handle the commercial aspects of the LNG project.

Several shipping companies have already shown interest in the LNG project, the statement said.

One of the shipping companies that has already invested in LNG-powered ships in Denmark is Terntank Rederi, located in Skagen.

“Terntank takes a very positive approach to this initiative in the Port of Frederikshavn. For quite some time now, we have been calling for some of the major bunker suppliers to take the initiative to provide LNG, and this new set-up fits perfectly into our strategy where we have already placed orders for four ships that will be fuelled by LNG,” Jens P. Buchhave, Managing Director of Terntank said in the statement.
