Cargo Ship Ablaze in Akita Port

Fire erupted aboard Cambodia-flagged ro/ro cargo ship Citeca while at anchor in Akita Port, Japan, at around 5:30 pm local time, January 13, The Asahi Shimbun reports.

According to Akita Coast Guard, the fire broke out on the ship’s cargo deck, which was at the time of the accident laden with plywood.

Fourteen Russian crewmen were safely evacuated from the 1984-built, 4250 dwt ship, and no injuries or oil contamination have been reported so far.

Akita Fire Department has put out the fire, but smoke is still gushing out, preventing the investigators to board the ship and determine the cause of the fire.
