Centrica extends Amec Foster Wheeler deal in Morecambe Bay

Amec Foster Wheeler has been awarded a £60 million ($73.4M) contract extension by Centrica for its onshore and offshore gas production assets in the Morecambe Bay, UK.

Centrica claims that the Morecambe Bay gas fields, located off the coast of Lancashire and Cumbria, are among the biggest in UK waters – approximately the same size as the city of Birmingham.

The Engineering, Construction and Project Support (ECAPS) contract includes work for operations and maintenance, minor modifications and projects, the company said on Wednesday.

The original contract awarded to Amec Foster Wheeler in 2011 is now extended for a further three years to the end of 2019. Amec Foster Wheeler noted that around 200 jobs will be secured as a result of the contract extension.

“I’m delighted that the team’s application of our ‘More 4 Less’ culture, systems and processes has resulted in this contract extension from Centrica. We are justifiably proud of our safe and efficient delivery across both on and offshore assets,” said Jim Lenton, President, Asset Support, Oil, Gas & Chemicals, Amec Foster Wheeler.

The company was recently approached with a $2.7B takeover offer from its compatriot Wood Group. This merger will, according to the energy intelligence group Rystad Energy, create a market leader with a market share twice as large as its competitors and a combined workforce of 64,000.
