Chevron Wins APPEA Environment Award for Quarantine Management (Australia)

Chevron Australia Pty Ltd has again been recognised for its excellence in environmental management and stewardship receiving the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association’s (APPEA) Environment Award for the second consecutive year.

Chevron Australia’s Managing Director, Roy Krzywosinski, was presented with the award by APPEA Chairman Eric Streitberg at the annual APPEA Conference and Exhibition held in Perth.

The award recognises the comprehensive Quarantine Management System (QMS) for the Chevron operated Gorgon Project which consists of more than 300 procedures, specifications, checklists and guidelines to protect the biodiversity of Barrow Island and its surrounding waters.

Chevron Australia’s Managing Director, Roy Krzywosinski said the QMS aims to facilitate the construction and operation of a gas processing facility on Barrow Island while simultaneously protecting the conservation values of the island.

It was considered ‘likely to be world’s best practice’ by the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority. “We are playing an important role meeting that challenge with the pioneering of a new, risk-based quarantine approach, one with no precedent or equal rigour anywhere else in the world.”

Mr Krzywosinski said the QMS was developed and refined in consultation with the broader scientific community, specialist environmental consultants and relevant government regulatory agencies.

“The scale of the Gorgon Project requires an enormous amount of goods, materials and equipment to be transported to Barrow Island along with significant numbers of personnel. Under the QMS, every single item and each passenger is comprehensively screened to ensure quarantine compliance prior to transport,” said Krzywosinski.

Since September 2009, Chevron has moved around 200,000 tonnes of freight to island; completed some 70,000 passenger movements; and trained more than 10,000 people in quarantine awareness.

Krzywosinski added, “All this activity has occurred with zero introductions or proliferations of non-indigenous species to Barrow Island or its surrounding waters.”

The APPEA Environment Awards recognise excellence and innovation in environmental management and demonstrate how industry is continuously raising environmental performance standards and inspiring world’s best practice.

The Gorgon Project is operated by an Australian subsidiary of Chevron and is a joint venture of the Australian subsidiaries of Chevron (approximately 47 percent), ExxonMobil (25 percent) and Shell (25 percent), Osaka Gas (1.25 percent), Tokyo Gas (one percent) and Chubu Electric Power (0.417 percent).
