China: CIC Lixin Shipyard Finishes Crankshaft Renewal for MV BBC Kelan

MV BBC Kelan, owned by Komrowski Befrachtungskontor KG.(Germany) arrived at CIC Lixin Shipyard on 7th March, 2011.The job scope were general maintenance and hydro-blasting in ballast tanks. An accident happened just one day before the ship scheduled sailing time. During the main engine mooring test, the crankpin bush of No.4 cylinder burnt down, which caused the damage of crank shaft in way of the said bearing.

The shipyard technicians worked coordinately with the ship’s crew to inspect and analyze the problem and found it was an assembling failure by the owner’s subcontractor. The ship owner decided to renew the damaged crank shaft due to dissatisfaction with the report of crack and toughness test carried out on the shaft. In order to reduce the weight of the entire engine set, together with the ship’s crew, the shipyard staff dismantled the attached cylinder heads, pistons, liners etc., removed the pipes and opened the access and lifted the engine from the foundation to the platform on the Ro/Ro deck. Then the yard workers renewed the crank shaft with the assistance from the maker’s technicians.

After the renewal, shipyard refitted the obstructive pipes, welded back the access opening and attended the installation of the foundation bolts, alignment, and the engine test. At present, the repair work is coming to the end and the vessel will be sailing soon.
