China: COSLINNOVATOR Successfully Completes Sea Trials

On 17:30 of Sep. 20th, 2011, the second semi-submersible platform COSLINNOVATOR built by Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore Limited (hereafter refers to CIMC Raffles) for China Oilfield Services Limited (hereafter refers to COSL) returned from sea trial, it successfully completed all the trial missions during an 11-days trial.

This trial breaks the 16-days’ record of COSLPIONEER, and is also less than the international standard of two weeks for semi-submersible trial.

COSLINNOVATOR is the fifth deepwater semi-submersible platform built by CIMC Raffles, it only spent 11 days in testing and commissioning the thrusters, endurance, drone bay, PMS, dynamic poisoning, communication system, FMEA and etc. more than 31 systems. Compared to COSLPIONEER, the first semi-submersible platform of China, it has reduced the sea trial by 5 days! CIMC Raffles made full preparation for this time based on summarizing the experiences of delivered projects, and optimizing the procedure.

CIMC Raffles has equipped with advanced facilities that far beyond other competitors in this industry, especially the 18 meter deep water wharf, which can accommodate nine drilling rig platforms at the same time, enables the platforms to install thrusters under water. At present, CIMC Raffles can install thrusters at an average speed of one unit per day for platforms, which is incredible! Compared with putting out to sea for installation, it has great advantages in time consuming, cost control and safety.

As a sixth generation platform equipped with state-of-the-art drilling and dynamic positioning (DP3) systems, COSLINNOVATOR is one of the most advanced platforms built in China. It is classed by DNV and has an overall length of 104.5 meters, overall width of 65 meters and overall depth of 36.85 meters. The design draught is 9.5 – 17.75 meters and displacement of 27,331 – 36,402 tones. The platform has a design life of 20 years and can accommodate up to 120 personnel. Compared to other similar platforms, COSLINNOVATOR is highly automated and provides a conducive and safe working environment for its crew. COSLINNOVATOR was designed and constructed in accordance to the requirements stipulated by the Norwegian Petroleum Safety Administration (PSA), and can be deployed in the North Sea as well as other regions in the world.

COSLPIONEER, a sister platform of COSLINNOVATOR, received an Acknowledgement of Compliance certificate (“AOC certificate”) issued by Petroleum Safety Authority (PSA) of Norway in June, 2011, and have started in operation in August 2011.
