Commissioner to propose new EU LNG strategy

EU commissioner Arias Cañete delivered a speech at the Lisbon Council presenting a vision for European energy efficiency and the challenge of energy security.

Cañete focused on the challenge of energy security saying that, without swift and decisive action, Member States will remain dependent on a single supplier that views the sale of gas not simply as a commercial matter, but as a political weapon.

Europe is seen more dependent on imports in the future, especially imports delivered via new pipelines like the Southern Corridor.

Cañete stressed the need for consolidation of relationship with partners like Norway and a reach out to new transit countries like Turkey or Algeria. He feels the EU has to support its old allies and friends like Ukraine and the Energy Community.

He revealed that he will soon be proposing a new EU LNG strategy and called for construction of necessary infrastructure to bring the imported volumes of gas where they are most needed within the European Union.
